How to Make Your Laptop a Wi-Fi Extender?

This article explains how to use your laptop as a Wi-Fi extender in two different ways: either by retransmitting the wireless signal without altering the login information or by setting up a new network on your laptop to share the Wi-Fi signal with other devices. Just like mywifiext do with Netgear Extenders.

How Can I Extend the Wi-Fi Range of My Laptop?

There are two ways to approach the solution to this dilemma:

  • Use a signal-repeating programme. Similar to how Wi-Fi extenders function, it amplifies the Wi-Fi signal to increase the total network reach without the use of dedicated Wi-Fi range extending hardware. This method should be useful if your house is too huge for one router to efficiently cover.
  • The built-in mobile hotspot function of Windows creates an instant Wi-Fi hotspot with a unique SSID and password from the main network. It comes in handy when you have to pay for a single connection for your laptop (like in a hotel or on a flight) but want to give your phone access to Wi-Fi as well. Additionally, you can give visitors access to your home’s internet without disclosing your actual Wi-Fi password.

Repeat the Signal

MyPublicWiFi is the programme we’ll use to demonstrate the procedure, however, Connectify with Hotspot MAX and other programmes function similarly.

  1. Install and download MyPublicWiFi. It was created to work with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11.
  2. Select WLAN Repeater from the network tab at the top of the software.
  3. There is typically only one option for an internet connection; select it.
  4. There are further features you can toggle from the security page, such as bandwidth restriction, an ad blocker, and URL logging, before completing the next step.
  5. Choose Launch Hotspot.

Share Internet Access

It is quite simple to create a Wi-Fi hotspot with Windows 11 and Windows 10. The setting may be found under Mobile hotspot in Settings.

  1. Launch Settings. The Win+i shortcut is the quickest route there.
  2. Navigate to Mobile hotspot under Network & internet.
  3. If you want to modify the setting for Share my internet connection, click the button next to it. For instance, perhaps you want to share the Ethernet connection over the Wi-Fi signal.
  4. On Windows 11, there is an additional option next to Share that allows you to select Wi-Fi or Bluetooth as the sharing method.
  5. If you wish to modify the default network settings, such as the network name and password, choose Properties > Edit (Windows 11) or just Edit (Windows 10).
  6. To enable the Mobile hotspot, click the button next to it at the window’s top.

Can My Laptop Serve as a Wireless Bridge?

A Wi-Fi bridge is useful in some situations, such as when the devices using the shared connection must access other devices on the network. If, for instance, you have a Roku plugged into your TV, the alternative isn’t ideal since, if the Roku is on the bridged network, but your remote or phone isn’t, the two won’t be able to speak with one another.

Connectify Hotspot is an application that is well-liked for use in this situation. To use Bridging Mode with Hotspot MAX, you must pay.

The previously described MyPublicWiFi software also functions. To identify the bridging option and select the network adapters for the bridged connection, use the Multifunctional Hotspot tab.
